In
November 08 SusWot and a polar bear invited the local community
to ‘choose’ to leave their cars at home on Tuesdays
that month, and explore other ways to live and work. The aim was
to do something significant as a village about climate change, and
everything was on the agenda: walking, cycling, bus, train, car
share, homeworking...
Chooseday
has already been adopted by a number of organisations in Bristol,
but Westbury was the first official Chooseday community in the city.
We asked people to let us know what they did differently on the
Tuesdays, and how it went, good and bad.
We provided ‘Travel and Tell’ leaflets in the village
for people's feedback, and there's also a feedback form on the Travel
and Tell pages of the Chooseday web site.
We
used the feedback to make recommendations to the Council for road
safety improvements. They are listed in a briefing
document we produced for the Council's Cycling City team.
ChooseDay the bear was also very busy in the village that month.
He visited all the local primary schools and a good few other places!
Click here for a few sightings.
We
hope you discovered healthier and more enjoyable ways to travel
during our ChooseDay month, and will keep it up on a regular basis!
And if you'd like some car-free travel alternatives in the village,
there's lots of information here.
Also,
a very big thankyou to the Chooseday champions in the village who
helped us out so much during the month:
Oxfam
Shop (Westbury Hill)
Smith’s Patisserie (Stoke Lane)
The Bristol 9 magazine
Westbury Inks (Canford Lane)
Westbury Library (Falcondale Rd)
