SusWot's working groups

Suswot currently has 4 working groups:

- energy
- transport
- green spaces
- waste reduction.

Our energy group is taking part in Bristol Green Doors, and we've also just launched a new project, working with the Energy Saving Trust (EST). Our aim is to help Westbury households save £300 on their energy costs each and every year - and cut carbon emissions.

Our transport group promoted alternatives to car travel in 2008, by running the “ChooseDay without cars” initiative. A particular highlight was introducing our life-size(ish) Chooseday polar bear to Westbury primary school children in their assemblies! We also put together "Transport Links from Westbury" - a guide to getting around this area without using a car.

The group is currently involved into 2 other city-wide transport initiatives - the “Transport For Greater Bristol alliance” (www.tfgb.org.uk) and “20s Plenty for Bristol”.

20's Plenty For Bristol (www.20splentyforbristol.org.uk) is calling for the implementation of 20 mph as the default speed limit on residential roads in greater Bristol. It's part of the national “20's Plenty For Us” initiative.

Our green spaces group engaged with the doctors at the new medical centre over the development of the green space next to it. They’re continuing to assist with the project as it develops. They’re also taking part in research work as part of the Council’s Bristol Area Green Space Plan.

Our waste reduction group audited shop keepers in the village about their interest in reducing plastic bag consumption. A follow-up meeting with the shops took place, and we later launched "the Westbury bag" - an alternative to plastic bags.

We also help run the monthly local produce market in the village (on the 4th Saturday of every month, from 9am-1pm, in the medical centre car park), and are currently talking to traders in the village about what we could do together to improve trade in the village and make the centre more attractive.
